‘We need a revolution Camp, an uprising; marching in the streets, shouting from the rooftops. We cannot let these crypto oligarchs take over the world and take away a century of functioning democracy.’
‘You’re right my friend, we need a revolution but it is the domain and prerogative of the young, not seniors and old farts like us. Where are the young who do not want to put up with a dictatorship by the super-rich?’
‘Busy staring at their little screens, texting, tik-toking and U-tubing? They seem to have no leader, no direction, no incentive.’
‘A revolution is needed when the rich oligarchs grab everything for themselves and leave the population floundering and poorer. That’s what’s happening in the USA thanks to the unprecedented, punitive trade war Trump has started, along with firing thousands of civil servants. He ignores one important fact: his own citizens are punished and paying for his wild and arbitrary tariffs and reciprocal countermeasures.’
‘What I don’t get Camp is the fact that the US was already the richest, most powerful and successful democracy on this planet. They have the most advanced technology, the best universities and scientists, the richest individuals, the most innovative companies and yet, it is apparently not enough. I really don’t get it.’
‘It’s the MAGA promise to make everybody rich, bring all those overseas jobs back to the US, build a golden security dome over the whole country and don’t let anybody in unless they’re invited that has convinced 77 million people.’
‘Isolationism, protectionism and tax-cuts for the rich will surely affect the middle-class, if there is still such a thing. Cutting social programs and letting thousands of civil servants go will also undermine the economic foundations. It’s bound to show cracks and fault lines before too long.’
‘Spoken like a home inspector,’ Camp said.
‘It needs to be a revolution of the middle-class which is slowly becoming the under-class.’
‘People need a banner and poster issue which will reunite democrats with their original base. Not pandering to minorities or dividing people by race, creed or beliefs. It needs to be in many ways a conservative, inclusive revolution, one that unites rather than divides. Maybe it can be this ill-fated trade war that brings people together.’
‘Right now, the future looks bleak and threatening for many and people are starting to blame their neighbours for their own ills. Like: it’s the Canadians that are robbing us blind and the Mexicans and Europeans are stealing from us.
‘A revolution usually is a time of upheaval, blaming, punishing and bloodshed. It is seldom one like the hippie’s vision of peace, love and flowers.’
‘Don’t forget the music.’
‘Yeah, those were the days my friend, I thought they’d never end.’
‘Is there going to be a rebellion?’
‘I think there will be. When their pocketbook is impacted. If there is a groundswell it can easily develop into a movement and an uprising.’
‘Here at home, we now have a new Prime Minister. Let’s hope he can stop the right-wing trainwreck.’
‘If you see light at the end of the tunnel, it could be a train coming head on,’ Camp said, lifting his empty pint just as Vicky was setting down two fresh ones.
‘I can see you two are talking about Trump again. He’s like the evil uncle that everybody fears and hates.’
‘Surrounded by bobbleheads whose only creed is loyalty to the bad uncle.,’ Camp said. It drives me to drink.’
‘I can help solve your thirst but you two can’t solve the problems of the world.’
‘We need a revolution and I don’t mean a turn around the pub.’
