Betrayal

“It looks like our ‘buy Canadian if you can’ or anything but from the US is working,” I said to Camp after he sat down in his usual chair at our watering hole. “David Eby, the BC premier said he believes the U.S. leadership has “very little awareness” of how offensive their remarks are, in response to the U.S. ambassador to Canada saying Trump thinks Canadians are “nasty” to deal with because of U.S. boycotts.”

“What would the ambassador say if I pointed out to him that his president is a convicted felon, a suspected pedophile with his buddy Epstein, a liar, a cheat, a narcissistic real estate hustler and a bully and that his race towards a fascist autocracy will not go over well in Canada or the rest of the civilized world.”

“He would probably have you blacklisted and incarcerated at the first opportunity. Don’t go near the US, if you value your life and family.”

“A bit dramatic, aren’t you Camp. Oh, I see, you’re serious. I thought you were being facetious, pulling my leg.”

“Let me read you the first item that comes up when I Google Fascism:

Fascism is a far-right, authoritarian ultranationalist political ideology and movement characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition, and strong regimentation of society and the economy. It emphasizes a centralized, autocratic government, strong nationalism, and the subordination of individual rights to the state’s interests.”

“Bulls-eye, I’d say. I’m glad they are feeling the pain from our boycotts. I for one make every possible effort not to buy anything made in the US but it’s not easy. We are very integrated for the last 100 years. It’s not that we don’t like American goods, it’s the fact that we feel betrayed. When a long-time friend suddenly turns on you and threatens to take over your house, your town and your country, it is treacherous and mean. Why would we not react to that sort of malice?”

“He didn’t only betray Canada, he betrayed Ukraine, Europe, Japan, the Palestinians and the whole established trading order that, while not perfect, has been worked out between countries over many years and with hundreds of lawyers and law makers.”

“And now the Trump administration has betrayed the whole world and the future of future generations. The EPA has drafted a plan to repeal the fundamental science that gives the government its authority to regulate greenhouse-gas emissions. The proposal rescinds the scientific findings that carbon dioxide and methane endanger human lives. As the New York Times writes: If the Trump administration is able to repeal the endangerment finding, it would not only erase all current limits on greenhouse gas pollution from cars, factories, power plants and other sources. It would prevent future administrations from trying to tackle climate change, with lasting implications.”

“I can’t wait until Trump releases an executive order that makes the earth flat and Mar-a- Lago the center of the universe,” I said.

“It’s no joke my friend. I’m waiting for the youth to rise up and walk out of Universities, Government jobs and tech-companies and start a revolution.”

When Vicky came by with our second pints, Camp asked her if she was in favour of a revolution. She looked at him sideways and said: “If you’re talking about a hashtag# revolution where the only actions are ‘likes’ and ‘thumbs up’ then the answer is no but if you’re asking me if a redistribution of wealth is in order, then I’ll march with you.”
